Christantus Uche Sparks Straightforward Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Missing key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their league season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
