European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
