On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
